Book Review

"Not another book report!!!" ~ anon

So for this week I am going to be answering the question: why do we have to do book reports for our English class?

People think book reports are dumb and a waste of our valuable time. I think that they are not. Book reports might take a while if you did not read the book, but if you did read the book, they go by so fast and they are really fun to do because it lets you relive the story you just read. It makes you want to read it again and again. Here is an example of a book review that I did so you guys can see why I like them so much.
(All of it is my own writing except the quotes, but you already knew that so whatever. Here it is.)

The book I did my book report on was called Ranger’s Apprentice: The Burning Bridge. It was written in 2005 by John Flanagan and it has 262 pages so anyone could read this book. I really liked this book because of how funny it is, but to get the jokes, you have to read the whole thing. This book is the 2nd book in the Ranger's Apprentice Series. The first book is called Ranger's Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan. This is a really great series that will captivate you from the first page.

In this series, there are many characters. Our main character is Will. Will is a smaller boy that is an apprentice to Halt, an orphan, and really good with the bow. Halt is Will's master, an old Ranger that stopped Morgarath from winning the last time, has grey hair, and has smaller proportions than everyone thinks. Also, he is deadly with a long bow. Horace is Will's mate in the castle ward that they both grew up in with Alyss Mainwaring, Jennifer (Jenny) Dalby, and George Carter. Horace is a Battle School Apprentice that has a natural ability to wield the sword and Will’s best friend.

These characters I mentioned already are our main characters in the whole series. In this book, there are many more. One of them is Glian. Glian is another Ranger and was apprenticed to Halt. Also, wields a sword that is uncommon for Rangers. Another character is Evanlyn. She is a girl they meet on their journey that has a secret that no one could have guessed. And lastly, Morgarath who is the main bad dude, that was a Baron at one time, that has a major grudge against Arulen for “kicking him out.”

Details are very important in a book report as they tell the person reading it that you actually did the work. After you tell about the characters, let the reader hear some of the story with a short story summary.

Here is an example.
Will and Horace and Gilan are sent on a mission for the Kingdom of Arulen. Their mission is to go to Celtica and get reinforcements so they can beat Morgarath in the upcoming battle. When they get to Celtica, they find out that everyone one is gone. During their travels, they find Evanlyn dying of starvation and sleep deprivation. Evanlyn tells them about how the Wargals took over the Kingdom and how they took all the miners somewhere. Will, Horace, and Evanlyn follow a group of Wargals to find out where they are taking the miners while Gilan rides back to Arulen to warn the king that there won’t be any help from the Celtican’s. Will, Horace, and Evanlyn are up against something they could never imagine.

So now to answer the question I have at the beginning of this blog post. English Teachers make you write book reports because they are helpful to you, the reader, and the teacher as it lets all of you know that you actually got something from the book and you actually read it instead of getting all your answers off of sparknotes or something else like it.

So that’s all for this week! Be safe guys!

  1. Hmm. Book Reports... I think book reviews are actually more helpful, while book reports can be done from just reading SparkNotes or Wiki... *shrug*
