My Thoughts About Your Thoughts On Grades

"I abhor grades - if a child does his[or her] best, that's all that should be asked." ~ Richard Dawson

Richard Dawson knew what he was talking about. Grades are very important, but, in grading a child's work, teachers need to put in their effort too. Grades should not be only determined by what score the students get on a paper. Some students do not test well. Should their grade be compromised because of this? There is a flip side to this too. Most students don't care enough about grades, especially when the end of school comes closer.

To show my opinion on this subject, I have written an essay (that was for my Creative Writing class) that will have 3 solutions to the problem of kids not caring enough about their grades. So here it is.

"Ugh I hate school. It's so annoying." This is becoming more and more the statement that the children of this generation are using. Kids are not caring enough about school or grades. This is not what we want our children to be saying since grades are the major factor for many of our opportunities. Grades are our tickets for jobs and for our entire future.

A way for this to be changed is for grades to count more. This would give the students the initiative to turn in their work while putting actual effort into their work. Although this might work for many people, there will still be people who will not care so this might not be the best idea.

Another solution is re-doing the education system so that your placement in school and in life, like many European and Asian countries, is based on your grades and how well you do in school. The better you do in school, the better you will do for the rest of your life and the better job/education you will be assigned to. Although, if we had this society, we may turn into a  communist society and people may not like the jobs they are assigned to so that might not be the brightest idea.

The last possibility that we could try would be to have a scoring system where you get a score that depends on your grades, the people you hang out with scores, and your abidance to the rules that society has imposed on you. With this you will have the most deserving, law-abiding citizens as your highest officials and they would be the leaders and owners of many businesses. They would be in charge and they would be the most likely to succeed as their score has shown because of its high number. The downer of this proposal is that we won't interact with each other unless they are in our scored range and that the people that don't score well won't have the opportunity to have better paying jobs.

In the end, having a scoring system, a dictatorship education system, or having grades count more is probably not the best way for students to get motivated into caring about their grades. There is possibly no way for us to make our students care about their grades unless they choose it for themselves. The only way for our society to progress and become one of the best countries in education is for students to start caring about what maters the most: their futures.
